Williamsburg, Va. – The UMBC men's tennis team captured three of six singles matches, but the host William & Mary Tribe edged the Retrievers, 4-3, in a match that began Sunday morning in Williamsburg.
The Retrievers got singles victories from sophomores Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md./National Connections Acad.), Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) and Eliott Loubatie (Paris, France).
Loubatie had a pair of wins as he combined with junior Kamal Patel (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) to win at No. 3 doubles, 8-4. Carter and Svard were edged, 8-7, at No. 1 doubles and the Tribe captured the doubles point.
William & Mary took a 2-0 lead with a win at No. 3 singles, but Svard cut the deficit to 2-1 with a prohibitive 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 position.
The Tribe (14-8) would clinch the match with victories at the Nos. 6 and 5 slots, but that did not stop Carter and Loubatie for fighting for their matches. Carter defeated W&M's No. 1, 6-2, 2-6, (10-8), while No. 4 Loubatie rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, (10-8) triumph.
UMBC (10-8) split its weekend matches, as they went late into the afternoon for a 4-3 triumph over Xavier on Saturday, before travelling to Williamsburg last night.
The Retrievers return home to welcome Georgetown to the UMBC Tennis Complex on Wednesday, April 9.
