Softball Blanks Maine in Series Opener, 3-0

Box Score

BALTIMORE – UMBC softball freshmen Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) and Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) helped to guide the Retrievers to their first conference victory of the season, as Holte tossed a complete-game shutout and Lane drove in two runs in a 3-0 victory against Maine in America East action on Friday afternoon at Mike Kessock Field.

Holte picked up her 14th victory of the season (14-6), one shy of entering into the top-10 on UMBC's single-season record list, while Lane went two-for-three from the dish with a pair of RBI-singles.

The Retrievers snap a four-game skid to improve to 23-15 on the season and 1-5 in league play, while Maine falls in its first home game of the season to drop to 13-12 overall and 5-4 in conference.

The Retrievers put two on base in the top of the fourth inning, with sophomore Bridget O'Malley (Brooklyn, Md./Seton Keough) and junior Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) each drawing walks. A single through the left side of the infield from sophomore Danielle O'Neill (Lothian, Md./Southern) allowed O'Malley to score to put the Retrievers out in front, 1-0. Lane helped to add another run in the frame, scoring O'Neill from third on a two-out single to right field.

Maine threatened in the bottom half of the fourth, starting with a one-out single up the middle from senior Jean Stevens. A wild pitch and an infield single moved her to third base, but Holte escaped the jam by getting freshman Shelby Obert to ground into an inning-ending double play.

An error in the top of the sixth allowed the Retrievers to add further insurance. Senior Chelsea Bertoglio (Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills/Saddleback College) reached on an error and advanced to third following a passed ball and wild pitch, making way for Lane's second RBI of the afternoon to give UMBC a 3-0 lead.

Maine starting pitcher Hannah Hill was credited with her second loss of the season (6-2) after allowing two earned runs on four hits. She finished with six strikeouts.

The series concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12, with the first pitch slated for noon.
