Women's Lacrosse Drops Season-Opener Versus No. 2 Maryland, 14-3

BALTIMORE – The UMBC women's lacrosse team opened up a two goal lead in the opening half versus No. 2 Maryland, but the Terrapins took over in the second period en route to a 14-3 victory in the season-opener for both squads on Friday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

Retriever captains Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) and Ali Carpenter (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) helped UMBC to take a two goal lead 4:54 into the contest, both registering unassisted scores. However, Maryland scored four straight goals to close out the first half, including a pair of scores in the final 1:02 of the period, to take a 4-2 advantage into the break. UMD Sophomore midfielder Taylor Cummings tallied two of her four goals and added one assist during the opening stanza, with both goals coming on free position attempts.

Maryland opened the game up in the second half, holding a 10-2 advantage in draw controls and a 25-4 shot differential. The Terrapins scored 10 straight in the second period, before the Retrievers' freshman attacker Mackenzie Reese (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) punched home a pass from Wilson with 4:47 remaining.

Cummings finished the contest with five points, five draw controls and three caused turnovers, while freshman midfielder Zoe Stukenberg added four goals.

Both squads used a pair of goalkeepers in the matchup, Maryland's red-shirt junior Abbey Clipp picked up the win with two saves, while UMBC's Anna Barnett (Midland, Texas/Midland) made one stop in the loss.

UMBC falls for the second time in the last six years in its season-opener, while Maryland is victorious for the 23rd time in its last 24 games.

The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 19 when they travel to local-rival Towson. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
