Retrievers Complete Day One of Patriot Invitational

Results

Fairfax, Va.—UMBC swimming and diving competed on day one of Patriot Invitational on Thursday evening. The Retrievers were led by Jonas Gutzat (Lappersdorf, Germany/BBS Nuernberg) and Emily Escobedo (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina).

On the men's side, Gutzat picked up an individual win in the 500 free. Jonas touched the wall in 4:34.14, almost a full second ahead of second place.

Nikola Trajkovic finished in second place in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.78. The only other UMBC squad to place in the top three was the 200 free relay team. Lauri Kaei, Trevor Doll, Bryan Mattingly, and Gregor Sporlein finished third with a time of 1:24.13.

The women were led by Emily Escobedo and her 200 IM victory. Escobedo took the gold with a time of 2:03.88, a full three seconds ahead of second place.

UMBC took 10th in the 200 free relay, and 10th in the 400 medley relay. Coco Darelius took home second place in the 3 meter dive for UMBC. Darelius scored a 255.60.

The Retrievers are back in action tomorrow with day two of the invitational. Prelims start at 10:00 a.m., and finals are at 6:00 p.m.
