Retrievers Fall on Senior Day, 3-0, to Albany

Baltimore, Md.-- The UMBC women's volleyball team fell, 3-0 at the hands of Albany on Sunday. Sophomore Zoya Trendafilova (Sofia, Bulgaria/Elisaveta Bagryana) led the way with ten kills. UMBC ends their season at 10-15, 4-8 AE.

The opening stanza saw UMBC come out of the gates fast. The Retrievers jumped out to a 5-1 lead, and extended the margin to 8-2, following a block from senior Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) and freshman Marissa Duncan (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron). Following the Albany timeout, the Great Danes hit their stride, cutting the deficit to just two at 14-12. UMBC fought back late, but Albany held on to win the set 26-24.

Albany continued their success into the second set. The Great Danes jumped out to a 6-2 lead early on. The Retrievers would fight back, tying the set at nine all following a Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame) kill, one of five on the day for Rojas. Albany opened things up late, forcing Coach Blanchard to call timeout, trailing 18-13. The Great Danes would hold on to win the set, 25-19, and take a 2-0 lead into the break.

Following the intermission, neither team could gain an edge offensively, as both sides took turns with the lead. Albany went on a 4-0 run midway through the frame to take a 14-11 lead, forcing another Retriever timeout. UMBC would push late, cutting the lead to 21-19 following a Rojas kill. However Albany would retain the lead, and win 25-19, and the match 3-0.  

The Retrievers were led by Trendafilova, who laid down ten kills, adding 13 digs for her first double double of the year. Schmidt chipped in seven kills and five digs in the loss, with junior Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and Rojas each had five kills.

Before the contest, UMBC honored three seniors for their accomplishments over their four years in Baltimore. Seniors Hannah Schmidt, Kristin Cooper (Davidsonville, Md./South River) and Tanaeri Santiago (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/American Military Institute) were honored.
