Schmidt Records Career Kill Number 1,000; UMBC Falls to Binghamton, 3-0

Box Score

Vestal, N.Y.—The UMBC volleyball team fell, 3-0, against Binghamton on Sunday. In the match, senior Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) recorded her 1,000th kill of her career. She is the eight player in program history to achieve the feat. UMBC falls to 9-10, 3-3 AE on the year.

Neither team could get a hold of the lead early on, until the Bearcats put together a string of three kills from Megan Burgess and Alexis Lagoy to force a UMBC timeout up 17-14. From there, the Retrievers would fight back, cutting the lead to just one after kills from junior Krystal Mlemchukwu (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) and freshman Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame). However the Bearcats would hang on to win the set 25-23.

Set two saw Binghamton strike early and often, as the Bearcats jumped on UMBC early. The Bearcats jumped out to an early 17-10 lead, forcing Coach Blanchard to call a timeout. From there Binghamton would only give up three more points en route to a 25-13 second set win.

The third stanza saw much of the same, as Binghamton jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. UMBC would not quit, as they climbed all the way back to take a lead after a Mlemchukwu kill to give them a 13-9 advantage. The lead would be battled for back and forth, until the Bearcats took control, forcing a timeout up 21-18. Binghamton would not relinquish the lead, and go on to win 25-21 and the match 3-0.

Mlemchukwu led all players with 14 kills, adding in one block. Rojas finished with seven kills, and Schmidt laid down six adding seven digs.

Hannah Schmidt recorded her 1,000th career kill just points into the match. Schmidt laid down the winner that gave UMBC a 4-3 lead in the first. She is just the eight player all time to record 1,000 kills.

The Retrievers are back in action on Friday, October 24, when they head to New Hampshire to take on the Wildcats. The match with New Hampshire is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
