Schmidt Moves Into 8th in Career Kills; UMBC Falls to New Hampshire, 3-0

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC volleyball team fell, 3-0, to New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon at the RAC. Senior Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) moved into eight place all-time in career kills (988) after her eight kill performance. UMBC falls to 8-9, 2-2 AE on the year.

The opening stanza saw each team battle for the lead, until the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to take control of the set. UMBC would make a push late, fighting back to cut the deficit to just three, thanks in large part to Schmidt and her six first set kills. UNH would hold on to the lead, and take the first set 25-19.

Set two saw the Wildcats get after the Retrievers from the get-go. UNH put together a 16-2 run midway through the frame, to take advantage and put UMBC away early. A pair of Brenna Buckwalter kills gave New Hampshire the set, 25-8.

The final frame saw much of the same, as UNH pushed ahead 7-2 early, forcing coach Blanchard to call a timeout. UMBC would answer back, cut the lead to three after a pair of Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) kills. From there, the Wildcats never let the Retrievers climb within four points, and ultimately finished off the match with a kill from Demi Muses to take the set, 25-20, and the match 3-0.

Schmidt led the way, laying down eight winners for UMBC, while also recording 15 digs. Redshirt junior Krystal Mlemchukwu (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) had seven kills, and Walker chipped in five on the day. Junior Paige Miller (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) added 24 helpers for the Retrievers.

In the match, Hannah Schmidt moved into eight place on the career kills list, passing Joanna Marshall.

UMBC is back in action this weekend, October 17 and 19, when they head to Albany and Binghamton. The match with the Great Danes is set for Friday at 7:00 p.m., and with the Bearcats at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
