Men's Basketball Hosts Matinee Versus Stony Brook on MLK, Jr. Day; ESPN3 Will Broadcast

Stony Brook at UMBC, 1-20-14

SET THE SCENE: UMBC (5-13, 1-4 America East) will play for the third time in a span of six days when the Retrievers host league heavyweight Stony Brook (12-6, 4-0) on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Monday, Jan. 20, at 2:00 p.m. The contest will be broadcast by ESPN3, with Eric Frede and Frank Sullivan on the call.

RETRIEVER UPDATE: The Retrievers have dropped two straight and have struggled on the offensive end in setbacks at UNH (56-42) and versus Vermont (73-47). UMBC managed only 26 field goals in the two games combined, converting only 29.9 percent from the floor. However, Aki Thomas' squad is still an impressive 5-2 at the RAC Arena this season. FR G Rodney Elliott is still on a record-scoring pace for first-year Retrievers, averaging 13.8 points per game. SR F Chase Plummer needs just one point to become the 12th Retriever to reach the 1,200-point plateau.

SEAWOLF UPDATE: Stony Brook has won three straight, after dropping a pair of non-conference contests. They edged upstart UMass Lowell, 70-65, at Pritchard Gym on Saturday evening. Four Seawolves scored in double figures, led by red-shirt FR G Ahmad Walker, who scored 18 points. 2013 America East Rookie-of-the-Year, forward Jameel Warney leads four 'Wolves in double figures with 15.7 points per game and also averages 8.9 caroms per contest.

Who's Up Next: The Retrievers have their first mini-bye of the season, as they do not compete again until Saturday, Jan. 25, when they host Hartford in the nightcap of the Hall of Fame Day doubleheader. Tip-time is 3:30 p.m.
