Men's Basketball Tries to Protect Home Court vs. Red-Hot Vermont in Saturday Matinee

UMBC (5-12, 1-3 America East) will try to shake off a dreadful performance at UNH on Wednesday, as the Retrievers shot only 27.5 percent from the floor and committed 19 turnovers in a 56-42 loss to the Wildcats. They face a red-hot Vermont (9-8, 3-0 AE) squad that has won five straight, including an 83-46 rout at Maine on Thursday. Gary Stein and Paul Mittermeier have the call on Q1370 (www.q1370.com) and streaming is available on www.umbcretrievers.tv. The America East digital network is now available on most mobile devices.

The Retrievers have been a completely different team at home and on the road this season. At home, UMBC is 5-1, have averaged 77.2 points per game and are outrebounding their foes by 7.2 caroms per game. On the road (0-11), the Retrievers average 63.3 points per game and are at -5.2 on the glass. FR G Rodney Elliott is still on a record-scoring pace for first-year Retrievers, averaging 14.1 points per game.

Vermont, the pre-season America East favorite, routed Maine, 83-46 in Bangor on Thursday evening. The Catamounts hit nearly 58 percent from the floor and outscored Maine in the paint, 38-14. SR F Clancy Rugg leads UVM with 14.4 points per game, while SR G Sandro Carissimo follows at 13.5 ppg. Rugg is hitting 56.5% from the floor, and Carissimo is at 46 percent from behind the arc.

The Retrievers have a quick turnaround, as they face 2013 regular season champion Stony Brook on Monday, Jan. 20 at 2:00 p.m. The game will be televised nationally by ESPNU.
