Brown's Late Goal Spurs Women's Soccer Over Bucknell, 1-0

Box Score

Video Highlights

BALTIMORE - UMBC junior Jessy Brown (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) headed in a corner kick from junior classmate Melissa Hummel (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) in the 85th minute as the Retrievers blanked Bucknell, 1-0, at Retriever Soccer Park.

UMBC (4-2-2) extended its unbeaten streak to four with the late victory, while Bucknell slipped to 3-5-0 on the campaign. The unbeaten run is the longest by the Retrievers since 2005.

UMBC senior goalkeeper Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ont./St. Thomas Acquinas) recorded her second consecutive shutout and her third of the season. Kadet made five saves, including four in the second half to blank the Bison.

The Retrievers held the edge in play throughout the game and ending up outshooting the visitors, 13-8. They also had eight corners to just one for Bucknell and capitalized late in the game.

Hummel took the corner from the right side and lofted it towards the far post. Brown, who scored the game-winner goal vs. Howard two nights ago, headed the ball back towards to the near post and it curled under the crossbar with 5:06 remaining.

"I am really happy with that result," head coach Leslie Wray said. "We showed integrity against a good team. We've always worked hard, now we have the belief that we are going to score."

The Retriever defense held strong down the stretch and the Bison were unable to mount a serious threat.

Bucknell mounted its best threat with the game scoreless in the 71st minute as Kadet was forced to make a point-blank save on Sarah Bresette and then corralled a rebound effort by Corey Tipton.

UMBC sophomore forward Alexa Quaranta (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) recorded a game-high six shots.

The injury-plaugued squad gets a week off before completing the three-game homstand when they welcome Wagner on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Notes: UMBC's four victories are its most since 2006… Brown has now scored goals in back-to-back games, the first two of her collegiate career.
