PHILADELPHIA – The UMBC women's soccer team remained
unbeaten in its last two contests, by opening the weekend with a
scoreless double overtime draw against St. Joseph's in
non-conference action on Friday night at Sweeney Field.
The Retrievers move to 1-1-1 after three games, while the Hawks
remain unbeaten after a trio of contests, with a 1-0-2 record.
UMBC wasted no time trying to make offensive opportunities,
setting itself up for a pair of corner kicks in the opening five
minutes of play, but the result was a shot high by freshman forward
Amanda
Dailey (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township/Monmouth).
SJU returned on the attack with a pair of corners in the opening
half that resulted in shots, but the Hawks were also unable to
capitalize.
Despite St. Joseph's outshooting UMBC, 7-2, in the second half,
the Retrievers had the best opportunity of the night, coming off a
corner kick from junior back Morgan Taylor
(Severna Park, Md./Severna Park). The corner kick setup a foul on
the Hawks and sophomore midfielder Nikki Boretti
(Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) followed with a headed ball off
the crossbar, 55:09 into the game.
Saint Joseph's kept the pressure on in the first overtime,
getting its golden opportunity of the night, but Mo Hawkins was
unable to capitalize, sending the game-winner wide of the net.
Dailey and sophomore back Amira Walcott
(Beltsville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) finished the night with two
shots apiece.
SJU outshot the Retrievers, 16-5, but the two teams combined for
just two shots on net in the contest. UMBC registered nine corners,
compared to the Hawks three.
The Retrievers return home on Sunday, Sept. 1, when they host
Drexel, as part of a UMBC soccer doubleheader. The UMBC men's
soccer team opens the afternoon with a 1 p.m. matchup against UNLV,
followed by the Retriever women at 4 p.m. versus the Dragons.
