Women's Soccer Drops Season-Opener to Mount St. Mary's, 1-0

Box Score

BALTIMORE – UMBC women's soccer senior goalkeeper Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) tallied six saves in the season-opener against Mount St. Mary's, but a first half goal from MTSM gave the Mount a 1-0 victory in Friday night's non-conference game at Retriever Soccer Park.

Both team's had opportunities early, as UMBC newcomer Destinee Morris (La Plata, Md./La Plata) registered three of her team-best four shots in the opening 20 minutes of action, including two from inside the box, but it was Mount St. Mary's that was able to capitalize. Sophomore midfielder Julia DiGiacomo gathered a ball and setup a blast into the far left corner of the net from sophomore Emma Blair, as the game-winner rolled just out of reach of a diving Kadet in the 29th minute.

The Retrievers continued to put the pressure on in the opening half, as a pass from sophomore midfielder Nikki Boretti (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) found the head of junior forward Lilly Rydon (Stirling, South Australia/Concordia College), but sailed just wide, preserving MTSM's lead. UMBC would hold a 7-4 advantage in shots in the opening half, but were only able to place one on goal.

Mount St. Mary's held an advantage on the offensive end in the second half, outshooting UMBC 7-5 in the period, but the Dawgs made one last charge in the final 10 minutes of the contest, recording three of their five second half shots during the span. Rydon sent another header wide and sophomore back Amira Walcott (Beltsville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) followed with a blast from the far right wing, but goalkeeper Vicky Cocozza made one of her three saves on the night. Freshman forward Amanda Dailey (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township/Monmouth) added a turnaround shot from the right side, but was unable to capitalize on the equalizer.

Rachel Bourne and Cocozza combined for the shutout victory between the pipes. Bourne, who played the opening 45 minutes, made one save on the night.

UMBC continues non-conference action on opening weekend when it travels to American on Sunday, Aug. 25. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Reeves Field. Live stats and video are available at UMBCRetrievers.com.

Notes
