Box Score
BALTIMORE – UMBC softball was unable
to hold off the America East's top offense on Sunday
afternoon, as Binghamton completed the series sweep against the
Retrievers with a 5-0 victory at the UMBC Softball Stadium.
The Retrievers (8-28, 1-8 AEC) fell for the seventh consecutive
contest, while the Bearcats (15-11, 5-1 AEC) won their fourth in a
row.
Binghamton jumped on the board early, scoring one run in the top
of the first inning. Starting pitcher Heather
Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) hit center fielder Sydney
Harbaugh with a pitch and the Bearcats followed with a pair of
singles to drive home Harbaugh and take the 1-0 lead.
UMBC looked to eliminate the deficit in the bottom of the frame,
loading the bases with a single and back-to-back walks, but the
Retrievers were unable to cash in as Bearcats starting pitcher Demi
Laney fanned the next three UMBC batters to escape the jam.
Binghamton added insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Designated player Tiffany McIntosh led things off with a walk,
cuing the exit of Brown. A single up the middle from first baseman
Lisa Cadogan, followed by a double into left field scored one run
for the Bearcats and left runners on second and third. A wild pitch
made the contest a three-run ball game and catcher Taylor Chaffee
tacked on two more runs with a homer over the left field fence,
giving BU a 5-0 advantage.
Laney (5-5) earned the complete game shutout, giving up four
hits and striking out eight. Brown (5-12) threw five innings,
allowing two earned runs, while Chelsea Bertoglio (Laguna
Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills/Saddleback College) tossed the last
two and surrendered three runs on five hits in relief.
The Retrievers return to the field on Wednesday, April 10 when
they step out of America East action for a single game against
local-rival Towson. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at the UMBC
Softball Stadium.
