Washington, D.C.- The UMBC men's tennis team went over the .500
mark for the first time this season and won for the fourth time in
five matches as they defeated host Howard, 6-1, on April 5.
UMBC improved to 7-6 overall, while Howard slipped to 1-5.
The Retrievers captured the doubles point as all three doubles
teams won their matches. The No. 1 duo of senior Gaulthier
Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) and freshman Justin
Carter (Randallstown, Md./National Connections Acad.) set
the tone with an 8-2 victory over Howard's top tandem of Mitchell
and Davis.
The Retrievers secured the match by taking five of the six
singles contests. At the No. 1 singles spot, Carter opened the
proceedings by taking his seventh consecutive singles match, 6-3,
6-4 over Mitchell. Classmate Alex
Drean (Bayonne, France) recorded an impressive 6-0, 6-0
victory over Howard's Dzakovic at the No. 3 position, while local
product sophomore Eric Jarkowski
(Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) came up with a
6-1, 6-2 victory over Burns at the No. 6 position.
UMBC returns to the nation's capital on Wed., April 10 when they
take on host Georgetown.
