ALBANY, N.Y. – UMBC softball's
sophomore catcher Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) launched
her team-leading seventh home run of the season in Sunday
afternoon's America East contest at Albany Field, but the
Great Danes went on to complete the series sweep with a 6-1
victory.
Albany moves to 28-10 on the season and 11-1 in the America
East, while UMBC drops to 8-36 and 1-14 in league play.
Hall's home run in the top of the first inning gave the
Retrievers their first run of the series and put UMBC out in front,
1-0.
The Great Danes evened the score in the bottom half of the
inning, Vicky McFarland led off with a double to left field and
moved over to third on a ground out to third base. An RBI-single to
left field from Maggie Cocks knotted the contest at one apiece.
The Retrievers started the bottom of the fourth inning on the
wrong foot, allowing leadoff batter Kylie Apostolina to reach on a
fielding error, followed by a one-out walk, putting runners on
first and second for the Great Danes. Three-straight singles from
Albany tacked on three more runs for the home team, extending the
lead to 4-1.
UMBC tried for a two-out rally in the top of the sixth inning,
as Hall picked up her second hit of the day on a single to center
field and junior first baseman Chelsea Bertoglio (Laguna
Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills/Saddleback College) followed with a
walk, but junior second baseman Caitlin Chance (Easton,
Md./Easton) was unable to capitalize, flying out to center field to
end the inning.
An UMBC error started Albany's scoring again in the bottom
of the sixth. With one out, Kelly Costello reached on a fielding
error. The Great Danes followed with three singles and two stolen
bases to add two more runs to its total and take a 6-1
advantage.
UAlbany starter Brittany MacFawn tossed the complete game
victory, allowing one earned run on two hits and striking out
eight. UMBC starter Heather Brown (Pasadena,
Md./Northeast) threw all six innings surrendering four earned runs
on 11 hits.
The Retrievers step out of league action on Tuesday, April 23
when it travels to La Salle for a doubleheader. Game one is set to
start at 3 p.m.
