Box Score
BOSTON, Mass. – UMBC junior first
baseman Chelsea Bertoglio (Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna
Hills/Saddleback College) launched her second home run of the
season, but it was not enough to mount the comeback as Boston
University completed the series sweep with a 3-1 victory on Sunday
at the BU Softball Field.
The Retrievers were unable to take advantage of early
opportunities, stranding the bases loaded in the top of the first
and again in the top of the third inning. In the first, a pair of
walks from Bertoglio and sophomore catcher Taylor
Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby), followed by a two-out single to left
field from freshman center fielder Bridget
O'Malley (Brooklyn, Md./Seton Kenough) loaded the bases, but
BU starter Lauren Hynes was able to get out of the jam getting
junior second baseman Caitlin Chance (Easton, Md./Easton)
to pop out to first.
Again in the third, Bertoglio walked, Hall singled through the
left side of the infield and O'Malley drew a two-out walk,
but the inning ended the same way, with a pop out to the first
baseman.
A leadoff walk from Chelsea Kehr and a stolen base from pinch
runner Kendra Meadows gave the Terriers a runner in scoring
position in the bottom of the third. A ground out to third base,
followed by a single to left center field from Jayme Mask scored
Meadows and gave Boston the 1-0 lead.
UMBC stranded two more runners in the top of the sixth, as
sophomore third baseman Courtney Reinfeld (Parkland,
Fla./Stoneman Douglas) picked up an infield single and advanced to
second on a single to left field from Chance. A fly out to center
field from junior left fielder Kayla Martinez (Odenton,
Md./Arundel) put runners on first and third with two outs, but
Boston University went to its bullpen, bringing in senior Whitney
Tuthill to get sophomore center fielder Mary Hartmann
(Eldersburg, Md./Century) to ground out to second to end the
inning.
Mask reached on an infield single in the bottom of the sixth,
stole second and moved over to third on a ground out to second
base. Junior Amy Ekart doubled into left center field, scoring Mask
from third. A single up the middle from Emily Roesch drove in Ekart
and gave the Terriers a 3-0 advantage.
The Retrievers (8-32, 1-11 AEC) got one back in the top of the
seventh with a two-out home run into left center field from
Bertoglio. Hall followed with a single through the left side of the
infield, her second hit of the afternoon, but UMBC was unable to
cash in the runs to tie up the contest.
Hynes earned the win, throwing 5.2 scoreless inning, while
Tuthill came in for the save, surrendering the one run. UMBC
starting pitcher Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast)
tossed six innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits.
The Retrievers continue their road stretch at Georgetown on
Wednesday, April 17. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
