Washington, D.C.- UMBC lost a hearbreaking match, 4-3, at
Georgetown on April 10.
The Retrievers (7-7) continued to be bolstered by the play of
senior Gaulthier
Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) and freshman Justin
Carter (Randallstown, Md.). The duo combined to win at No.
1 doubles and both won in singles competition.
Carter and Berret edged Charlie Caris and Casey Distaso, 8-5, at
No. 1 doubles, but the Retrievers Nos. 2 and 3 doubles teams fell
and the host Hoyas captured the first point of the match.
UMBC got off to a brilliant start in singles, as Carter led off
with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Daniel Khanin at the No. 1 position to
record his eighth consecutive victory in singles competition. The
Retrievers took leads of 2-1 and 3-2 as freshman Alex
Drean (Bayonne, France) and Berret both rallied for
three-set victories. Drean triumphed over Reese Milner,
3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 3 position, while Berret outlasted Shane
Korber, 1-6, 7-6 (8), 6-1.
At No. 2 singles, UMBC freshman Melker Svard
(Gothenburg, Sweden) dropped his first set, 7-5, vs. Caris, but
took the second set, 6-3. Svard carried the momentum
into the third set, taking a 3-0 lead, but the GU senior rallied
for a 6-4 third-set victory.
In the deciding match, UMBC sophomore Daniel
Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) battled Alex
Tropiano in a second-set tie-breaker, but fell, 6-2, 7-6 (7).
UMBC plays its final home regular season match of the 2013 when
they host America East rival Binghamton on Saturday at 10:00
