BALTIMORE – UMBC softball was unable
to slow down the bats of local rival Towson, as a the Tigers
tallied 13 hits against the Retrievers' pitching staff en
route to a 10-0 victory in six innings of non-conference action on
Wednesday afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium.
The Tigers (18-23-1, 2-7 CAA) did all of their damage
offensively in two innings, recording four runs on four hits in the
top of the first and adding six runs on seven hits in the
sixth.
The Retrievers put the leadoff runner on base on an errant throw
and an infield single put runners on first and second for junior
third baseman Delanie Dunham, who homered over the left field fence
to give Towson the 3-0 advantage. The Tigers were not done yet
though, senior catcher Jillian Donnelly beat out a slow grounder to
second and sophomore second baseman Macie McGeehan doubled to left
center to drive in Donnelly and extend the lead to 4-0.
UMBC looked to chip away at its deficit in the bottom of the
third as it loaded the bases with two outs. Freshman left
fielder Jane Pardo (Malverne, N.Y./Sacred Heart) led off
with a single to right field, freshman center fielder Jordan
Sganga (Edgewater, Md./South River) reached base on an error
and junior first baseman Chelsea Bertoglio (Laguna Hills,
Calif./Laguna Hills/Saddleback College) was hit by a pitch.
Freshman designated player Danielle O'Neill (Loathian,
Md./Southern) was unable to cash in any runs for the Retrievers
though, grounding out to third base to end the inning.
The Tigers added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning,
opening up the frame with doubles from three of the first four
batters. A second single in the inning forced UMBC to its bullpen,
relieving starting pitcher Heather Brown (Pasadena,
Md./Northeast). Towson would score two more runs in the inning
before freshman pitcher Rachel Ionata (Tampa, Fla./Palm
Harbor University) was able to get the Retrievers out of the
frame.
TU senior Katie Lingmai allowed just three hits and earned the
complete game shutout to move to 10-12 on the year. Brown (5-13)
surrendered eight earned runs, while Ionata gave up one in
relief.
UMBC (8-29, 1-8 AEC) looks to get back on the right foot over
the weekend when it jumps back into America East action with a
doubleheader against Boston University on Saturday, April 13
scheduled for 1 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday with a single
game set for noon.
