Men's Basketball Goes Stone Cold, Falls at First-Place Stony Brook

Stony Brook, N.Y.- UMBC threw a very early scare into first-place Stony Brook, but the Seawolves won for the 20th time this season, defeating the Retrievers, 83-39, at Pritchard Gym.

Senior guard Ryan Cook (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) led UMBC with 15 points.

Stony Brook (11-2, 20-6) extended its home court conference winning streak to 17 in a row. UMBC (4-9, 6-20) dropped its fourth consecutive game.

UMBC got out of the gate in excellent fashion, and when sophomore guard Joey Getz (Philadelphia,Pa./Archbishop Wood) buried a trey, the Retrievers had gained a 23-14 advantage with 9:14 to play in the first half. But the Retrievers would only hit two additional field goals after that point and Stony Brook caught fire. The Seawolves closed the final 8:18 of the half on a 33-6 run, and surged to a 47-29 halftime advantage.

SBU scored 17 points off of UMBC's ten first half turnovers to spark their rally.

UMBC managed only three second half field goals and the Retrievers misfired on their final 20 3-point attempts of the stanza.

Stony Brook shot 51.7 percent from the floor in the game, while UMBC managed just 26.3 percent shooting.

UMBC returns home on Sat., Feb. 23 when they host Boston University.
