Stony Brook, N.Y.- UMBC threw a very early scare into
first-place Stony Brook, but the Seawolves won for the
20th time this season, defeating the Retrievers,
83-39, at Pritchard Gym.
Senior guard Ryan Cook (Laurel,
Md./Pallotti) led UMBC with 15 points.
Stony Brook (11-2, 20-6) extended its home court conference
winning streak to 17 in a row. UMBC (4-9, 6-20) dropped its fourth
consecutive game.
UMBC got out of the gate in excellent fashion, and when
sophomore guard Joey Getz
(Philadelphia,Pa./Archbishop Wood) buried a trey, the Retrievers
had gained a 23-14 advantage with 9:14 to play in the first half.
But the Retrievers would only hit two additional field goals after
that point and Stony Brook caught fire. The Seawolves closed the
final 8:18 of the half on a 33-6 run, and surged to a 47-29
halftime advantage.
SBU scored 17 points off of UMBC's ten first half turnovers to
spark their rally.
UMBC managed only three second half field goals and the
Retrievers misfired on their final 20 3-point attempts of the
stanza.
Stony Brook shot 51.7 percent from the floor in the game, while
UMBC managed just 26.3 percent shooting.
UMBC returns home on Sat., Feb. 23 when they host Boston
University.
