Box Score Stony Brook, N.Y. - Seniors Ali Goc (Oshawa,
Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin) and Hannah
Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales), each recorded a
double-double, but it was not enough as the Retrievers dropped a
tough five-set decision (19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 15-9) to host
Stony Brook, Friday night at Pritchard Gymnasium.
Goc had a team-high 12 kills to go along with 18 digs, while
Schmidt, the defending America East player of the Week, hit a
match-high .312, with 11 kills, 13 digs and four aces. Senior
Mallory McIntyre (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy) paced UMBC
(14-9, 5-3 AE) with 39 assists to go with 11 digs, while freshman
libero Casey Griffith (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) added in
23 digs of her own.
The black and gold started off strong against Stony Brook
(12-13, 6-2 AE), going on a big run to take a close first set and
put it out of reach. The Retrievers twice had a nine-point lead en
route to a 25-19 victory. Schmidt had three kills and two aces in
the first set alone.
The second set resembled the early part of the first set, both
teams battled back and forth until the Seawolves went on a late 5-1
run to take the set 25-21. Senior Emily
Witsaman (Medina, Ohio/ Medina) led UMBC with four kills and
three blocks in the set.
McIntyre had eleven of her assists in the third set to lead the
Retrievers to a hard-fought 25-23 victory. UMBC squandered a 22-18
lead in the set, but Witsaman got two straight kills following a
timeout to win.
Stony Brook would dominate the fourth set, and would score
the final five points of the fifth set to take the match. The
Seawolves were led by Hannah Dolan's 47 assists and Kaitlin
Costello who had 19 kills and 19 digs.
The Retrievers have a bye on Sunday before returning to action
on Friday, November 1 at 7 pm when Binghamton comes to the RAC
Arena. Senior day will take place at 1 pm the following Sunday
before UMBC ends the season with four consecutive America East road
contests.
