VESTAL, N.Y. – UMBC softball
sophomore Jessica
Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) went 1-for-3 and hit
her tenth homerun of the year, but the Retrievers (17-19, 1-5
America East) fell to Binghamton (15-17, 6-3 America East), 8-2,
Saturday afternoon at East Gym Field.
The third baseman went 6-for-9 in the three-game series against
the Bearcats with two homeruns, two doubles and three RBIs.
Senior Katie
Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) took the
loss for the Retrieves on Saturday after yielding eight runs, only
three of them earned, in a complete six inning
effort. The right-hander is now 8-8 on the season.
Demi Laney picked up her second win of the series after
giving up only two runs on five hits in four innings of work.
The Retrievers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the series
finale as Warner and freshman Taylor
Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) each hit solo homeruns for the
Retrievers in the top of the first. For Hall that is her
fourth homerun of the year and she trails only Warner on the
team.
Binghamton cut the lead in half during the bottom of the inning,
scoring one unearned run against Ferguson.
Neither team scored in the second nor third inning before the
hosts took the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run
homerun by Briana Andrews. Binghamton added five
more runs in the bottom of the sixth for the final 8-2
margin.
Andrews paced the Bearcat offense on Saturday, going 3-for-3
with three RBIs and two runs scored.
The Retrievers return to the diamond on Wed., Apr. 11 when they
host Mount St. Mary's. First pitch between UMBC and the
Mount is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the UMBC Softball Stadium.
