BALTIMORE, Md. – America East Rookie
of the Week Taylor
Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) went 2-for-3 with a double, but
was the only Retriever to reach base as Georgetown defeated the
UMBC softball team, 8-0, Tuesday afternoon at the UMBC Softball
Stadium.
Hoya right-hander Megan Hyson (5-4) was in control throughout
the game, pitching a complete game, two-hitter while striking out
13 batters to earn the win for Georgetown.
Junior Heather
Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) took the loss for UMBC
after giving up six runs, four of them earned, on five hits over
three plus innings of work.
The visitors jumped on Brown right out of the gate with a run in
the top of the first to stake to an early 1-0 lead. UMBC
looked to level the game in the bottom of the inning, but Hall was
stranded on second after her two-out double. The Hoyas
added two runs the very next inning to build a three-run
cushion.
In the bottom of the third, Georgetown looked poised to break
the game open as the visitors loaded the bases with no one
out. Brown got three straight fielder's choice outs
however, to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Hoyas put the game out of reach in the fourth inning though,
knocking Brown out of the game with three runs on only two hits,
building the lead to 6-0. They added a run each in the
fifth and seventh innings to provide the final eight-run
margin.
UMBC now hits the road to continue its America East schedule
with a road trip to New York to take on Binghamton. The
Retrievers and Bearcats will play two games on Friday beginning at
1 p.m. followed by a single contest on Saturday set to start at 12
p.m.
