Maine Walks Off with 1-0 Win to Sweep UMBC

Box Score

ORONO, Maine – Maine's Jennifer Eberhardt hit a one-out fly ball to center field and Brynne Davis raced home with the game's only win as the Black Bears finished off a sweep of UMBC, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Kessock Field.

UMBC's Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) (8-10), who was pitching for the first time since Apr. 14, threw 6.2 innings giving up only seven hits, but took the loss on Eberhardt's sacrifice fly.

Kylie Sparks (3-8) earned the win for the Black Bears after pitching four scoreless innings in relief of starter Ashley Kelley.

UMBC out hit Maine 8-7 in the series finale, but both teams spoiled chances throughout as each squad stranded nine runners in the game.

The Retrievers had one of the best chances in the game in the top of the sixth as Ferguson started the rally with a one-out double to centerfield. Senior Amanda Damisno (Tamaqua, Pa./Marian Catholic) followed with a walk and both runners advanced on a wild pitch.  Classmate Ashley Carver (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) then reached on an infield hit to load the bases with just one down.  Sparks then forced a pop up to short and a ground out to short to end the inning.

UMBC now returns to Baltimore to host Boston University for a three-game series to conclude the regular season next weekend.  The Retrievers will play a doubleheader on Saturday and finish the season with a single game on Sunday.
