ORONO, Maine – UMBC sophomore third
baseman Jessica
Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) went 3-for-4,
including a double, and walked twice but the UMBC softball team
dropped both games to Maine in Saturday's doubleheader at Kessock
Field. The Black Bears won the first game 7-1 before
claiming the sweep with a 9-1 victory in six innings in game
two.
In game one, Ashley Kelley (7-11) earned the win for
the Black Bears after pitching five innings, giving up just one run
on five hits and striking out five batters. Kylie
Sparks came in for the final two innings to earn her first
save of the year.
Sophomore Kayla
Martinez (Odenton, Md./Arundel) took the loss for the
Retrievers after yielding four runs, only two of them earned, on
six hits in 2.2 innings of work.
After UMBC stranded two runners in the top of the first, the
hosts took advantage, plating a run in the bottom half on an RBI
double by Jessica Burk.
UMBC leveled the score two innings late as senior Angela
Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) drove in Warner who had
led off the inning with a double to left center.
Maine responded immediately however, retaking the lead with
three runs in the bottom half. The Black Bears finished
off the scoring three innings later to end the game with three runs
in the bottom of the sixth pushing the score to 7-1.
Maine's Beth Spoehr gave the Black Bears the sweep by
picking up the win in game two after surrendering just a single run
while scattering six hits in a six-inning complete game effort.
Junior Heather
Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) was charged with the loss
for UMBC after giving up five earned runs on 13 hits in 5.2 innings
of work.
UMBC started brightly in game two as Warner opened the game with
a single up the middle. She came home later in the
inning to give the Retrievers the 1-0 lead on a single by
senior Ashley
Carver (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West).
Maine responded immediately, tying the game in the bottom half
of the inning on an RBI single by Hillary Kane. Two
innings later the Black Bears put the game out of reach with four
runs to take the lead, 5-1.
The hosts scored two runs in the third and another in the fourth
to push the game to the brink, leading 8-1 after four
innings. Two innings later, Stephanie
Wood raced home from third to push the lead to eight, 9-1, and
give Maine the walk-off win.
UMBC and Maine will finish the three-game series with one game
tomorrow which is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start. The
Retrievers then return home to host Boston University for a
season-ending three-game series next week.
