BALTIMORE – UMBC sophomore Kayla
Martinez (Odenton, Md./Arundel) and junior Heather
Brown (Pasadena, Md./North East) each threw a complete
game and senior Ashley
Carver (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) hit her
first career homerun as the UMBC softball team swept LaSalle in a
doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the UMBC Softball
Stadium. The Retrievers rallied for a 3-2 victory in
game one and then held off a late Explorer charge to take game two
as well, 5-3.
In game one, Martinez gave up only two runs while scattering
five hits and going to distance to pick up her first win of the
season and the first of her career.
Alicia Aughton took the loss for the Explorers after giving all
three runs on five hits in six innings of work.
Both pitchers were in control early combining to give up only
one base hit in the first four innings.
In the top of the fifth, LaSalle took the lead on an RBI single
by Tristan Musho. UMBC fought right back in the bottom
half of the inning starting with a two-out single by
Martinez. The Retrievers then took the lead on a two-run
homerun to centerfield by Carver.
UMBC added a run in the next inning as freshman Taylor
Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) led off the inning with a double
to deep center and then came in to score an unearned run on a ball
hit by freshman Courtney Reinfeld(Parkland, Fla./Stoneman
Douglas). LaSalle rallied in the seventh, but only
managed one run to provide the 3-2 final.
In game two, Brown picked up where Martinez left off, allowing
just three runs on six hits to pick up her seventh win of the
year.
The visitors took the lead with a single run in the top of the
third, but could not hold off the Retrievers.
In the bottom of the fifth, UMBC capitalized on three Explorer
errors to score five runs, a lead that would not be
overturned. Sophomore Jessica
Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) tied the game with
an RBI single up the middle, and then scored the winning run on a
double steal with senior Katie
Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC).
LaSalle did not go quietly, however, scoring solo runs in the
top of the sixth and seventh, but could not come all the way back
and against Brown.
UMBC now heads back on the road to take on America East rival
Maine this weekend.
