BALTIMORE – The UMBC softball team
dropped the series finale against America East rival Stony Brook,
5-0, Sunday afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium. The
seven-inning game lasted just one hour and 11 minutes, the shortest
game for the Retrievers this season.
Seawolves starter Allison Cukrov limited UMBC to just one hit
while picking up her 17th win and 11th shutout of the seasaon.
Junior Heather
Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) (6-8) took the loss for
the Retrievers after giving up three earned runs on two hits in a
complete-game effort. The right-hander struck out one
batter and issued one walk.
Stony Brook took the initiative early, scoring one run in the
first and plating two more in the second to build an early 3-0
lead. Cukrov did not need any more as she did not allow
a Retriever base runner until senior Angela
Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) led off the fifth
inning with a single up the middle. The first baseman
advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, but could not get any
further.
The Seawolves then added single runs in the sixth and seventh
innings to provide the final margin.
UMBC now has the week off from action before heading to
Connecticut to take on Hartford in a three-game series next weekend
beginning on Saturday.
