BALTIMORE, Md. – UMBC senior Angela
Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) recorded four hits and
belted two homeruns as the Retrievers swept both games of
Saturday's doubleheader against St. Peter's at the UMBC Softball
Stadium to improve to 16-14 on the season.
In game one, freshman Miranda
Clark (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant) picked up the win for UMBC
after pitching 5.1 innings, giving up one earned run while
scattering three hits. The right-hander struck out five
batters to improve to 3-2 this season.
The Retrievers jumped out to an early lead, plating four
runs in the bottom of the first inning. Yannone started
the scoring with an RBI single to plate sophomore Jessica
Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown), who led off the
game with a single up the middle. After
sophomore Caitlin
Chance (Easton, Md./Easton) raced home on a wild pitch to
give UMBC a two-run lead, freshman Kaila
Balatgek (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) doubled to bring
in Yannone. Classmate Courtney
Paone finished the scoring with an RBI single to right to
drive in Balatgek.
Yannone and Warner each went 3-for-4 in the first game, driving
in a combined four runs and scoring four as well.
Yannone extended the Retrievers lead to five in the third inning
with her fourth homerun of the season and tenth of her career.
The Peahens finally got on the board in the fourth inning with
Francesca D'Amato and Michelle Tinajero each scoring a run to make
it a 5-2 game.
The Retrievers responded with four more runs in the fifth inning
to put the game out of reach with a seven-run lead,
9-2. Senior Kate Ferguson (North East, Md./North
East/Cecil CC), Yannone and Balatgek all singled to start the
inning, pushing the lead to 10-2. Warner had the big
blow for UMBC, doubling to right-center, driving around
senior Katrina
Gaar (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar/Orange Coast
CC) and Balatgek.
In game two, UMBC rallied for four runs in the bottom of the
third inning to overturn a one-run deficit and defeat the Peahens,
7-2.
St. Peter's took a one-run lead in the top of the third inning
after Alexis Gallagher scored on a single by Nichole Olmedo.
UMBC answered right back however, with senior Amanda
Damiano (Tamaqua, Pa./Marian Catholic) leading off with a
double to right field. After Warner walked and both
runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Chance, freshman Taylor
Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) tied the game with an RBI single
through the left side. The Retrievers took the lead as
the next batter, Ferguson, hit into a fielder's choice, allowing
Warner to score. Yannone capped the inning with a two-run
shot, giving UMBC the lead for good.
Junior Heather
Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) pitched five innings for
UMBC allowing only two runs on seven hits to even her record at 5-5
for the year. She struck out four batters issuing only
two walks. Sophomore Kayla
Martinez (Odenton, Md./Arundel) went two innings and
struck out three batters for her first save of the year.
The Peahens cut the lead to two, 4-2, with a run in the fifth
inning but Damiano hit a three-run home run in the sixth to restore
the Retrievers' five-run cushion.
