BALTIMORE, Md. – After Saturday's
America East opener between UMBC and Albany was canceled due to
rain, the Great Danes won both makeup games today at the UMBC
Softball Stadium. The series finale will be played on
Monday with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
Freshman Taylor
Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) led the Retrievers in the two
games, going a combined 3-for-5 at the plate with two homeruns and
four RBIs. Sophomore Caitlin
Chance (Easton, Md./Easton) also registered three hits in
the two games.
In game one, Hall gave the Retrievers an early 2-0 lead, hitting
her second career homerun in the bottom of the first
inning. Albany edged closer immediately however, picking
up a run in the top of the second to cut UMBC's lead in half.
UMBC responded in the bottom of the third when Hall once again
homered to left following a single by Chance, pushing the host's
lead to three, 4-1.
The Great Danes pulled even just an inning later, scoring three
runs on two homeruns, knotting the game at four runs
apiece.
Both teams got runners on base over the next three innings, but
neither could push a run across, forcing extra
innings. Albany made the most of the opportunity, taking
the lead on a two-out double by Lauren Alcorn.
Both Albany's Brittany MacFawn and UMBC's Katie
Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) pitched a
complete game with each taking the decision for her squad,
respectively.
In game two, Albany signaled its intent early, scoring twice in
the top of the first. Two-time America East Player of
the Week Jessica
Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) cut into the lead
right away for UMBC, hitting a lead-off homerun in the bottom of
the first, her eighth round tripper of the year, to get UMBC on the
board.
The Retrievers could not get much going after that though,
getting outhit 11-5 in the game as Albany scored two runs in the
third and seventh innings each to claim the second game of the day
as well.
Brittany Schweiger earned the with for the Great Danes, going
the distance while giving up only the one run while scattering five
hits.
Freshman Miranda
Clark (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant) was charged with the loss
after giving up four runs on four hits in two and two-thirds
innings of work.
