Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – UMBC softball
senior Katie
Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) threw her
eighth straight complete game as the Retrievers downed Brown, 7-1,
on the final day of the UMBC Spring Classic at the UMBC Softball
Stadium.
Ferguson matched a season-high on Sunday, striking out eight
batters, to pick up the win for UMBC (10-12). The
right-hander has now won seven of her last eight decisions while
posting a 1.25 ERA.
Brown's Sam Brown was charged with the loss after giving up
three runs in just over one inning of work.
Freshman Courtney
Paone (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) led the
Retrievers at the plate, going 3-for-3 and scoring two runs against
the Bears. Senior Angela
Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) hit two solo homeruns
for UMBC, who went 3-2 at the four-day tournament.
After both teams were held scoreless in the first inning, the
Retrievers took the initiative in the bottom of the
second. Freshman Courtney Reinfeld (Parkland,
Fla./Stoneman Douglas) started the rally with a double to right
center, and then advanced to third on a single by
Paone. Classmate Kaila
Balatgek (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) capped the inning
with a three-run homer to left center, bringing home pinch
runner Katrina
Gaar(Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar/Orange Coast CC) and
Paone.
UMBC increased the lead the very next inning on Yannone's first
solo shot of the day, this one to left center. In the bottom
of the fourth, the Retrievers pushed the lead to six on RBI singles
by senior Ashley
Carver (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and
sophomore Caitlin
Chance (Easton, Md./Easton). Yannone then
slammed her second homerun of the day in the bottom of the fifth to
finish UMBC's scoring and push the lead to seven.
Brown got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh on a lead
off solo homerun by Kat Strobel.
UMBC returns to the diamond on Tuesday when the team travels to
Virginia to take on George Mason. First pitch between
the Retrievers and Patriots is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
