BALTIMORE, Md. – The UMBC softball
team scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to comeback
and defeat Siena, 5-2, to claim a split on the first day of the
Dawg Pound Invitational at the UMBC Softball
Stadium. The Retrievers fell to Mount St. Mary's, 11-0,
in the team's first game of the day.
Trailing by one run, 2-1, with two down in the bottom of the
sixth, freshman Courtney Reinfeld (Parkland,
Fla./Stoneman Douglas) started the rally by reaching on an
error. The next four batters also reached, capped by an
RBI single from sophomore Caitlin
Chance (Easton, Md./Easton) to give the Retrievers a two
run lead, 4-2. Senior Ashley
Carver (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), who had
reach on an RBI single of her own, came into score on a wild pitch,
to make the score 5-2.
Senior Katie
Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) once again
went the distance for UMBC, evening her record at 4-4 with her
third straight win. The right-hander yielded only two
runs on four hits, while picking up seven strikeouts.
Amanda Filippazzo took the loss for Albany after giving up all
five runs, but only one earned, in a complete six innings.
UMBC struck first on Saturday, plating a run in the bottom of
the second on an RBI single by freshman Kaila
Balatgek (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township). Siena
came back in their very next at-bat, scoring twice in the top of
the third to take the lead, 2-1.
Filippazzo limited the Retrievers to only three hits through the
first five innings before the hosts finally made their mark in the
bottom of the sixth.
After Reinfeld reached, she was followed by a single from
classmate Courtney
Paone (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) and
senior Amanda
Damiano (Tamaqua, Pa./Marian Catholic) was hit by
pitch. Carver then made the breakthrough with a single up the
middle to put UMBC on top, 3-2.
In the first game, Mount St. Mary's shutout the Retrievers,
11-0, behind pitcher Nicole Pagano. Pagano no-hit UMBC,
becoming the first pitcher to do so since Boston U.'s Cassidi Hardy
accomplished the feat on Apr. 18,
2010. Sophomore Jessica
Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) was the only
Retriever to reach base, which came on a walk in the fourth.
Pagano pitched a complete five innings and recorded six
strikeouts for the win, while UMBC junior Heather
Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) was charged with the
loss. She is now 2-3 after giving up seven runs in just
over one inning of work.
Mount St. Mary's came out of the gate strong, scoring four runs
in the top of the first, and followed with six more in the
second. Liz Christiansen led the way for the
Mountaineers, going 3-for-4 with two homeruns and four RBI.
The Retrievers return to the field tomorrow for another
doubleheader. On day two of the Dawg Pound
Invitational UMBC will take on Niagara at 1:20 p.m.
followed by a game with Seton Hall at 3:30 p.m.
