Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC softball
team's trip around the beltway to take on local rival Towson
on Wednesday afternoon has been reshedulued for next Thurs. March
8, due to rain. First pitch between the Retrievers and
Tigers is still scheduled for 2 p.m.
UMBC and Towson have met 46 times through the years, with the
Tigers holding a 28-18 series lead. The Retrievers' win
last year broke a three-game win streak by Towson.
UMBC heads into the rivalry game with a 2-6 record, following a
third place finish at the Charleston Southern
Tournament. The Retrievers dropped all three round robin
games before defeating Hampton, 14-9, in Sunday's consolation
game.
Standout freshmen Taylor
Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) has made a mark so far this
season, including going 6-for-12, with three doubles and three RBI
at last weekend's tournament in South Carolina. Her performance
earned her the season's first America East Rookie of the Week
honors.
Senior Katie
Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) has also
been a key for the Retrievers in the early going, driving in three
runs. She led the Retrievers in Sunday's win over Hampton, going
for 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Jessica
Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) has also performed
well for the Retrievers, picking up 10 hits in 23 at bats (.435) so
far. The sophomore leads the team with three extra base
hits in 2012.
