CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UMBC softball
team (2-6) fell to host Charleston Southern, 4-0, in the final
round robin game, but defeated Hampton, 14-9, in the consolation
contest Saturday at Buccaneer Field in the Charleston Southern
Tournament.
After falling to the Pirates yesterday, the Retrievers had to
come from behind on Saturday after Hampton scored three first
inning runs.
UMBC responded quickly though, tying the score at three in the
top of the second inning on an RBI single by senior Katie
Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC).
The Retrievers were forced to regroup again after the Pirates
plated one in the bottom of the third, but a four run rally, capped
by an RBI single by freshman Taylor
Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby), gave UMBC its first lead of the
game.
Hampton again rallied and took the lead, 9-7, after scoring two
runs in the bottom of the fourth and three in the fifth.
The Retrievers were not done though, sending ten batters to the
plate in the top of the seventh to turn the two run deficit into a
six run lead, 14-7. Hall's double brought in two runs to
give UMBC the lead, 10-9. SeniorKatrina
Gaar (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar/Orange Coast
CC) finished off the rally by plating classmate Ashley
Carver (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) with a
single to center.
Freshman Miranda
Clark (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant) picked up her first career
win for the Retrievers and is now 1-1 on the season.
In the opening game, UMBC was shutout by tournament host
Charleston Southern, 4-0.
The Buccaneers' Linzy Rother threw seven scoreless innings to
record the win, while Ferguson (0-4) was charged with the loss.
UMBC now returns to Baltimore before traveling to rival Towson
on Wed., Feb. 29. First pitch between the Retrievers and
Tigers is scheduled for 2 p.m.
