Milwaukee, Wisc.- UMBC junior forward Chase
Plummer (Plainfield, N.J./St. Patrick) scored a team-high 12
points and the visiting Retrievers hung with the Big East's
Marquette Golden Eagles for quite a while before falling, 79-46, at
the Bradley Center.
UMBC took a brief second-half advantage as senior guard Brian
Neller (Red Bank, N.J./Christian Bros. Acad.) drained a
trey and junior forward Brett Roseboro
(Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) banked in a nine-footer from the wing
and the Retrievers led ,31-30, at the 16:52 mark of the half.
But the Golden Eagles responded with a massive 17-2 run to lead
47-33 with 12:00 remaining. Cook briefly halted the run
with a bucket and free throw, but Marquette held UMBC to 29
percent second- half shooting and improved to
5-1 on the season.
UMBC (1-4) held a 13-12 lead on a jumper in the lane by Plummer
with 13:14 to play in the first half, but the hosts ran off a 7-0
run to take a 19-13 lead.
Plummer tied the game at 20-20 on a right baseline jumper with
4:25 to play in the stanza, but the Golden Eagles outscored
UMBC, 8-4 in the final moments of the half and took a 28-24
advantage at the break.
UMBC held Marquette to its lowest first-half point total of the
season.
Senior guard Ryan
Cook (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) scored nine points and added a
team-high seven rebounds, while Neller added eight points.
The smaller Retrievers, who hit 10-of-22 attempts from behind
the arc in their last outing vs. Central Connecticut State, had
some good looks, but managed to convert only 3-of-21 against
Marquette.
Marquette forward Jamil Wilson hit 7-of-8 shots from the floor
and led all scorers with 15 points.
UMBC returns home for two evening games in three days, welcoming
Canisius on Thursday and local foe Towson on Saturday.
