WASHINGTON, D.C. – UMBC swimmers won
24 out of 32 events, led by a meet-best three individual wins each
by seniors Pierre De
Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State),
Mohamed
Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College), and Jennifer
Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) as the
Retrievers swept George Washington, Saturday afternoon at the
Charles E. Smith Center Pool. The men downed the
Colonials 148-99 and the women won 138-119.
Overall, twelve different swimmers won at least one event for
the Retrievers who improve to 3-0 on the men's side for the season
and 2-2 for the women's team.
Seniors led the way for both squads as De Waal and Hussein
combined to win six events. De Waal, the America East
Swimmer of the Week after week one, took top honors in the 200 free
(1:43.11), 200 fly (1:53.24) and 500 free (4:48.08) against GW
while his classmate Hussein, the conference weekly winner last
week, won the 50 free (21.15), 100 free (46.26) and 200 IM
(1:53.47). Sophomore Lauri
Kaei (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) also
picked up multiple event wins, claiming the 100 back (52.54) and
100 fly (51.75). Meanwhile, freshman Leo
Endres (Bamberg, Germany/Kaiser Heinrich Gymnasium) won
for the third straight meet, winning the 200 breast (2:10.74).
Senior Steve
Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and juniors Johan
Rohtla (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary Science) and Reed Neuendorf (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) also won
events for the Retrievers.
On the women's side, Kotonias led by example for UMBC, besting
the field in the 200 fly (2:06.90), 100 fly (59.37), and 200 IM
(2:09.07). Junior Talor Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella
Vista) also won multiple events, winning the 100 breast (1:07.42)
and 100 free (52.73) against the Colonials.
Junior Erika Ronning (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) won
the 50 free (24.92) for the second time this year, while junior
Klara Pavelkova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnasium Pripotocni)
picked up her second win in the 100 back (59.01) on the young
season. In addition, freshman Catherine Frediani
(Ellicott City, Md./Howard) won her first career event, the 200
back (2:08.12).
UMBC now has two weeks off from competition before hosting
Howard on Saturday, Nov. 10 at the UMBC Aquatic
Complex. The meet between the Retrievers and Bison is
scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. and will be shown live on
UMBCRetrievers.tv.
