BALTIMORE – The UMBC men's and
women's swimming and diving teams each defeated Rider, but the
women lost to James Madison, Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Aquatic
Complex. The Retriever men defeated the Broncs, 171-114,
and the women won 167-117, but lost to the Dukes 175-124.
Seniors Pierre De
Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State)
and Mohamed
Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) each won three
individual events to pace the men, while Klara
Pavelkova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnasium Pripotocni)
claimed victory twice for the women.
De Waal start his day by winning the 200 free (1:43.26) and
followed it with wins in the 200 fly (1:51.53) and 500 free
(4:43.46) before capping the meet by aiding the 400 free relay to a
win. Meanwhile, Hussein showed his versatility by claiming the
victory in the 100 breast (59.58), 200 back (1:53.18), and 200 IM
(1:53.68) and anchoring the 200 medley relay team to a
win.
Sophomore Evan Carey (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island)
joined the veterans as a multiple-event winner by winning the 50
(21.95) and 100 free (47.34). Carey also anchored the
victorious 400 free relay while sophomore Lauri Kaei (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary
Science) and senior Steve Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) were
part of both relay wins.
Sophomore Rob
Breen (Danvers, Mass./St. John's Prep) continued his
strong start by winning the 1,000 free (9:49.80) while freshman Leo Endres (Bamberg, Germany/Kaiser Heinrich Gymnasium)
won his first career dual meet event, the 200 breast (2:12.14).
For the women, Pavelkova showed her dominance in the backstroke
by sweeping the 100 (58.57) and 200 (2:07.55)
events. Senior Amy
Fay (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) and Erika
Ronning (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) won the 1,000
free (10:26.57) and 50 free (24.47), respectively, for the
Retrievers.
UMBC does not have much time off as the squad returns to the
pool on Friday, Oct. 19 to host Navy. The Retrievers and
Midshipmen are scheduled to kick-off their meet at the UMBC Aquatic
Center at 4 p.m.
