Team Effort Leads Women's Basketball Past Maine, 75-55

Box Score

ORONO, MAINE – Nine different Retrievers scored, led by a game-high 23 points from senior Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), as the UMBC women's basketball team defeated Maine, 75-55, Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena.

The Retrievers (8-8, 2-1 AE), who trailed for only 46 seconds in the game against the Black Bears (3-12, 0-2 AE), picked up their fourth road win of the season.

"Our seniors made sure we were ready and focused for today's game," said coach Phil Stern.  "We did a good job of starting fast and putting the game away early."

Trailing 7-6 a little over four minutes into the game, the Retrievers took the lead on a three from Brown and never looked back.  Brown finished the 8-0 run with another three staking UMBC to a 14-7 lead.

UMBC led by as many as 17 in the first half twice, the first coming after a layup by junior Kristin Coles (Charles Town, W.Va./Notre Dame Academy/American), and then moments later following a jumper from Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville).  Kurowski netted 14 points in the game and has now scored in double-digits in two of the Retrievers' three conference games this season.

Just missing her season-high of 24 points against UMES, Brown scored 13 of her points in the opening period, sparking the Retrievers to a 42-28 lead at the half.

The Retrievers shot 46% from the field in the first half and 43% from behind the arc.

The second half proved to be the same story as the first, as the Black Bears cut the lead to 13 before UMBC ran off nine straight points, pushing the lead to 53-31 after Brown finished a lay-in from freshman Lauren Chase (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist).

The lead would grow to a game-high 30 at 70-40, after junior Raven Harris (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne/American) completed a three-point play with 8:03 to play in the game.

For the game, UMBC outscored Maine 32-20 in the paint and converted 23 Maine turnovers into 22 points.

The Retrievers now return home to open a two-game conference home stand beginning with Stony Brook visiting the RAC on Thursday, Jan. 12.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
