Last-Minute Bucknell Goal Sinks Women's Soccer, 2-1

Box Score

BALTIMORE—Bucknell forward Kayla Yee collected a loose ball in front of the goal and put it in the back of the net with just over a minute remaining in regulation to break a 1-1 tie and send the Bison (1-3-0) to a 2-1 win over the host UMBC women's soccer team (0-5-0) Sunday afternoon at a hot and humid Retriever Soccer Park.

The game was scoreless at halftime, but late in the 52nd minute, Bucknell forward Liz Dwornik collected the rebound of a deflected pass from teammate Chelsey Garkowski and slipped it past UMBC sophomore goalie Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) into the lower right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Bison's advantage stood for exactly 20 minutes, when UMBC junior forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) was all alone at the top of the box after a Bucknell turnover and easily placed the ball in the lower left corner to tie the game with her second goal of the season.

The game appeared destined for overtime, but with 1:10 left in regulation, Bucknell forward Megan DeGennaro sent a cross from the left side into the box. The loose ball was tipped by midfielder Jenna Tryon, and Yee emerged from the scramble with the game-winner.

Kadet made seven saves between the pipes for the Retrievers, while Bison goalies Sandita McDermott and Colleen Garrehy each played 45 minutes, with Garrehy stopping five shots in the second half.

Bucknell edged UMBC, 16-14, in shots, and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. McKee, the America East Player of the Game, took a game-high six shots.

The Retrievers return to action on Friday, when they host cross-town rival Towson at 7 p.m. in their first game under the newly installed lights at Retriever Soccer Park.
