Team Effort Leads Volleyball to 3-0 Decision Over Binghamton

Baltimore- UMBC freshman outside hitter Dalton Tolliver(Ortonville, Mich.) tied a season high with 16 kills as the Retrievers blanked Binghamton, 3-0, in an America East Conference volleyball match played at the RAC Arena.

The Retrievers triumphed, 25-15. 25-22, 25-15 and have won four straight matches over the Bearcats. UMBC snapped a brief two-game slide and improved to 11-6 overall and 1-1 in league play, while Binghamton fell to 8-11, 0-2.

"The girls responded very well- I think they really wanted it tonight," head coach Ian Blanchard said. "The effort you saw tonight was much more consistent in every phase of the game. It was a complete team effort. "

Tolliver hit .500 for the match and added four assisted blocks. Senior setter Allie Spaay (Kenosha, Wisc.) posted a double-double with 33 assists and 14 digs.

Binghamton junior middle blocker Alex Roland led her side with nine kills.

The Retrievers hit a blistering .452 in the first set and finished the proceedings on a 15-5 run. Tolliver had eight kills without a miscue, while Spaay added 10 assists and nine digs.

Binghamton held a 19-18 lead in the second set, but UMBC took the lead for good at 21-20 on a Tolliver put-away.

The Retrievers never trailed in the third set, using a 9-1 run to extend an early 7-5 advantage to 16-6.

UMBC hit .304 for the match, compared to .073 for the Bearcats. The Retrievers outblocked their guests, 14-2, with junior middle blocker Katie Kelly (Diamond Bar, Calif.) and sophomore right side hitter Ali Loynachan (Whitby, Ont.) combining for 16 assisted blocks. Kelly tied a team and personal season-high with nine assisted blocks.

Freshman Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) added nine kills and had no errors for UMBC.

UMBC returns to the RAC Arena to host defending league champion Albany on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 2:00 p.m.
