Women's Soccer Tripped Up at Stony Brook, 4-1

Box Score

STONY BROOK, N.Y.—Junior forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) gave the UMBC women's soccer team (0-10-1, 0-2-0 AE) an early lead, but host Stony Brook (3-8-0, 1-1-0 AE) scored four unanswered goals and defeated the Retrievers, 4-1, Thursday evening at LaValle Stadium.

Despite being outshot, 17-7, in the first half, it was UMBC that struck first when McKee fired a laser into the top-left corner from 25 yards out in the 14th minute, her career-high and team-best third goal of the season.

But 20 minutes later, Stony Brook midfielder Regan Bosnyak corralled a loose ball off a corner kick and blasted a 20-yard missile into the left side of the net to tie the game. Then, just 37 seconds later, the Retrievers were the recipients of some bad luck as Seawolves midfielder Sa'sha Kershaw dribbled down the right flank and attempted to cross the ball into the penalty area, but it ricocheted off a UMBC defender and into the cage for an own goal that gave the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.

Stony Brook led, 2-1, at halftime, but the Seawolves struck again in the 63rd minute, capitalizing on a counterattack. Forward Shannon Grogan set up a play with a penetrating run to the endline before delivering a perfect ball into the center of the box, which Bosnyak put home.

The Seawolves were not done, however, as forward Larissa Nysch wrestled the ball away from a UMBC defender and tipped it to forward Eliza Mendoza, who put the ball away for Stony Brook's fourth goal of the night.

UMBC sophomore goalie Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) made seven saves between the pipes, while Chelsea Morales stopped five shots for the Seawolves.

Stony Brook outshot UMBC, 28-12, and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, when they host America East rival Vermont at 1 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
