UMBC Battles Navy to a 0-0 Draw in Women's Soccer Action

Box Score

BALTIMORE—Sophomore goalie Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) made seven saves as the UMBC women's soccer team (0-8-1) snapped its season-long eight-game losing streak with a 0-0 tie against in-state rival Navy (6-3-2) Wednesday evening at Retriever Soccer Park.

The America East Player of the Game, Kadet earned her second career shutout and first since a 2-0 clean slate against Vermont on Sept. 26, 2010.

The 10th-ranked team in the Mid-Atlantic region, Navy played its fourth straight overtime game. But the Midshipmen were forced to play shorthanded for the final 52 players after goalkeeper Hannah Legler received a red card.

Navy dominated possession in the first half and outshot the Retrievers, 7-5. But the second half was more even, despite a 10-3 shot advantage for the Midshipmen. UMBC was hurt by seven offsides calls in the game.

The Retrievers had a good opportunity to win the game in the 101st minute, but Navy goalie Elizabeth Hoerner made a diving save on sophomore forward Amy Savage's (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Wilfrid Laurier) shot, deflecting the ball out of bounds. The ensuing corner kick found the feet of junior midfielder Sarah Purdum (West Fenwick Island, Del./Indian River), but Hoerner stopped her shot, as well.

The Midshipmen outshot the Retrievers, 19-11, in the game and held an 8-4 advantage on corner kicks. Hoerner recorded five saves in nearly 97 minutes between the pipes for Navy. Junior forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) took a game-high four shots.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, when they open America East Conference play against Hartford. Kickoff from Retriever Soccer Park is scheduled for 1 p.m.
