TOWSON, Md.—The UMBC volleyball team won
its first two matches of the Battle of Baltimore Friday, defeating
both Coppin State and Loyola, 3-0, on the campus of Towson
University. With the wins, the Retrievers improve to 4-2 on the
season and have won four in a row.
In the first match of the day, the Retrievers controlled the
Eagles, winning 25-17, 25-15, 25-13. UMBC hit an outstanding .355
to Coppin State's .049. Senior Allie
Spaay (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) earned her
first double-double of the season with 37 assists and 14 digs. Both
outside hitters, sophomore Hallie
Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) and
Schmidt, each had 13 kills, while Carter also added 12 digs.
Junior Katie
Kelly (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar) had six
kills while hitting .444 with three blocks, while Kennedy led the
team with five blocks.
In the night cap, the Retrievers defeated Loyola, 25-16, 25-18,
25-10.
"We served and serve-recieved really well and were able to keep
the pressure on Loyola," head coach Ian
Blanchard said.
The Retrievers return to action Saturday when they face Towson
and host Morgan State in the final day of the Battle of
Baltimore.
