Women's Soccer Blanked by VMI, 2-0

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va.—Host VMI (3-2-1) scored a pair of first-half goals to defeat the UMBC women's soccer team (0-8-0) by a score of 2-0 Friday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The Keydets first got on the board in the 20th minute, when midfielder Sarah Strand lofted a ball into the middle of the box, and forward Simone Jimenez headed the ball past UMBC sophomore goalie Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) from about five yards out.

Then, just over five minutes later, Jimenez found the feet of midfielder Sarah Putney with a quick pass, and from just inside the box, Putney blasted the ball into the upper-left corner of the net for the 2-0 VMI lead.

The Retrievers outshot the Keydets, 14-6, including 8-0 in the second half, but could not find the back of the net. UMBC generated the game's first quality chance, when junior forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) beat a VMI defender and had a one-on-one chance against goalie Amanda Berrios, but the shot was pushed just wide. In all, 12 different Retrievers took at least one shot in the game.

Kadet recorded one save in net for UMBC, while Berrios stopped five shots to preserve the shutout.

The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, when they host Navy at 7 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
