Softball Completes Series Sweep of Stony Brook with 6-1 Victory; Weigman Breaks Wins Record

STONY BROOK, N.Y.—Senior Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge,Md./Archbishop Spalding) turned in a strong pitching performance to lead the UMBC softball team (17-12, 3-3 AE) to a 6-1 victory over America East rival Stony Brook (9-16, 0-6 AE) Sunday afternoon at University Field, completing the series sweep of the Seawolves. The win was the 58th of Weigman's career, breaking Lauren Nicholson's school record.

As they did in each of the first two games of the series, the Retrievers got on the board in the first inning, scoring a pair of runs with two outs, as sophomore right fielder Ashley Scroggin (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) followed senior left fielder Julia Culotta's (Street, Md./North Harford/Tennessee) double with her team-leading eighth home run of the season.

Culotta later led off the fourth inning with her sixth homer of the year, and freshman shortstop Jessica Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) made it 4-0 with an RBI single later that inning.

The Seawolves scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth without recording a hit, as they took advantage of a pair of Retriever errors.

But UMBC got two more in the fifth, scoring two unearned runs after Stony Brook shortstop Jessica Combs committed an error. Warner picked up her second RBI of the game with a bases-loaded walk.

Weigman (10-7) allowed just one unearned run on five hits and three walks while striking out three in the complete game victory. Taylor Chain suffered the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work.

The Retrievers were outstanding offensively this weekend, scoring 21 runs and collecting 31 hits and four home runs in the three-game set. Culotta led the way with six hits and five walks in 12 plate appearances, while junior first baseman Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) went 6-for-12 with five RBIs.

The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, when they take on Georgetown at 2 p.m. in Washington,D.C.
