Softball Drops Pair of Close Games to Mount St. Mary's

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
EMMITSBURG, Md.—The UMBC softball team (19-16) dropped a pair of heartbreakers to Mount St. Mary's (11-21) Thursday afternoon at Meadows Field. The Mountaineers rallied for both wins, defeating the Retrievers 5-4 in game one and 6-5 in eight innings in the nightcap.

Game 1: Mount St. Mary's 5, UMBC 4

The Mountaineers struck first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring a run on a two-out RBI single by designated player Beth Everist, but the Retrievers took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on a three-run homer by sophomore right fielder Ashley Scroggin (Stafford, Va./North Stafford), her team-best 10th of the season.

The Mount got a run back in the bottom of the inning, then went ahead, 4-3, in the fourth, on an RBI groundout by left fielder Chloe Mizianty and a single by right fielder Courtney Zingle, both with two outs.

UMBC senior left fielder Julia Culotta (Street, Md./North Harford/Jarrettsville) tied it in the fifth with her seventh double of the season, which drove in senior center fielder Lynn Pronobis (Waldorf, Md./McDonough), who had walked with one out.

The score remained knotted at 4-4 until the bottom of the sixth, when Mount St. Mary's shortstop Taylor Beebe led off the inning with a double and eventually scored on Zingle's RBI base hit two batters later. Mountaineer starter Nicole Pagano retired the Retrievers in order in the seventh to preserve the victory for the hosts.

Sophomore Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) suffered the loss after allowing one run on two hits in her only inning of relief. Senior Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) started the game and allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out six in five innings of work. Pagano gave up four runs on four hits and five walks to earn the complete-game victory.

Game 2: Mount St. Mary's 6, UMBC 5 (8 innings)

The Retrievers led, 5-1, before the Mountaineers rallied to score five runs in the last three innings.

UMBC scored three times in the first on a two-run double by junior catcher Angela Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and a sacrifice fly by senior second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover).

The Mount got one back in the bottom of the inning, and the score remained 3-1 until the Retrievers scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to go up, 5-1. Mount St. Mary's scored once in the bottom of the sixth but stranded the bases loaded, then scored three runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

UMBC had a runner on third in the top of the eighth but couldn't bring her home, and Mount first baseman Jenna Zimmerman drove in the game-winner with a two-out single in the bottom of the inning.

Brown again suffered the loss in relief, allowing four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings. Junior Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) started the game and gave up two runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work. Amanda Sadowl earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings in relief.

The Retrievers return to action this weekend, when they host America East rival Binghamton in a three-game series.
