BALTIMORE—The UMBC women's lacrosse team (5-2) scored 13 goals in the first half and defeated Manhattan (2-3) by a score of 20-6 Sunday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.
Nine Retrievers found the back of the net, led by senior midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), who scored a game-high six goals. Senior attack Erika Braerman (Fallston, Md./Fallston) led all scorers with seven points on two goals and a career-best five assists, and junior attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster), the America East Player of the Game, tallied a career-high six points on three goals and three assists, all in the first half.
Braerman put got the scoring started just 53 seconds into the game, and after Manhattan attack Julia Lavelle tied it up 4:20 later, junior midfielder Alicia Krause (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron/Duquesne) ignited a 7-0 UMBC run at the 22:35 mark. Coady scored three straight goals during that span.
The Jaspers scored two of the game's next four goals, but the Retrievers tallied the last three of the half and led, 13-3, at the break.
UMBC opened the second period with a 7-1 run, with four goals by Pappas to take a game-high 16-goal lead, 20-4, but Manhattan scored the final two goals of the game.
Krause also notched a hat trick in the game, while a pair of freshmen – midfielders Jennie Ballenger (Mount Airy, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) and Taelar Errington (Valley Lee, Md./Leonardtown) scored the first goals of their careers.
Lavelle led the Jaspers with four points on two goals and two assists.
All three Retriever goalies saw time between the pipes, each allowing two goals, while senior Natalie Rau (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) and sophomore Kendall Mason (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) made one save apiece.
Julia DiBernardo and Jayne Timo each played 30 minutes in goal for Manhattan and combined for six saves.
UMBC outshot Manhattan, 35-14, including 23-6 in the first half, and held a 17-10 advantage on draw controls and a 14-11 edge on ground balls.
The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, when they visit Mount St. Mary's.
Notes: The 20 goals were the most UMBC has scored since March 29, 2010, at Manhattan, a 20-7 victory… At 5-2, the Retrievers are off to their best start since 1994… Braerman's five assists give her 51 in her career, moving her into seventh place all-time at UMBC.
