BOSTON, Mass.—The UMBC men's and women's track and field
team concluded the first day of the 2011 America East Championships
Friday. The men sit in fourth place with 23 points. Binghamton
leads with 57, followed by Albany and New Hampshire with 47 and 27,
respectively. Boston University (20), Maine (9), Stony Brook (5),
Vermont (4) and Hartford (3) round out the field. The women are
currently seventh with 18.5 points. Albany leads with 50, followed
by New Hampshire (44), Boston U. (42.50), Binghamton (22), Stony
Brook (21), Vermont (19), while Maine has 16 points.
The men's distance medley relay team of senior Michael Christmas
(Invercargill, New Zealand/James Hargest College), freshmen Andrew
Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Jake Albino (Hampton,
N.Y./Minisink Valley) and senior Chris Snyder (McConnellsburg,
Pa./McConnellsburg) finished second in a UMBC record and
IC4A-qualifying time of 9:49.52.
Senior Martin Nevarez (Casa Grande, Ariz./Central Arizona
College) won silver in the pole vault with an IC4A-qualifying mark
of 4.80m, while junior Sam Wilson (Davidsonville, Md./South River)
finished eighth with a mark of 4.35m.
Sophomore Amanda Deller
(Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) earned silver in the women's weight throw
with an ECAC-qualifying time mark of 16.33m, while sophomore
Cameron McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) earned bronze in the
men's weight throw with an IC4A-qualifying heave of 17.05m.
Senior Sara
Parkinson (Chorley, England/Loughborough University) crossed
the line fourth in the 5,000-meter run in an ECAC-qualifying time
of 17:22.83.
Sophomore Chowan
Brightful (New Market, Md./Linganore) placed sixth in the
pentathlon with 3,210 points. Junior Laura Walker
(Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) finished eighth in the women's pole
vault, hitting a mark of 3.00m.
After four events, senior Keith Onto (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point
Pleasant Boro/St. Francis (PA)) is first in the heptathlon with
2,781 points.
Junior Joshua Hewitson (New Market, Md./Linganore) is seeded
first in the men's 500-meter dash after posting an IC4A-qualifying
time of 1:03.67.
Sophomore Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) and senior
Keith Brown (Columbia, Md./McDonough) are ranked second and third
in the 60-meter hurdles. Junior Imani Colbert
(Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) is seeded fourth in the women's
60-meter hurdles with an ECAC-qualifying time of 8.68.
Freshman Kirsten Jones
(Brentwood, Tenn./M.L.K. Magnet) is ranked fifth in the women's
400-meter dash in an ECAC-qualifying time of 56.44, while junior Lauren
Leclercq (Jessup, Md./Meade Senior High) is ninth with a time
of 58.61. Jones is also seeded fifth in the 200-meter dash in
25.18.
Freshman Deborah
Adelola (Lanham, Md./Bladensburg) is seeded sixth in the
women's 500-meter dash with a time of 1:16.85.
