Box Score Baltimore, Md.—Despite an inspired second half effort,
UMBC could not overcome a record-low 10 first half points and fell,
63-46 to visiting New Hampshire in an America East Conference
contest.
The Wildcats won for the third time in their last four outings
and improved to 12-14 overall and 6-8 in league play. UMBC dropped
its second in a row and fell to 5-21, 4-9.
UNH senior guard Tyrone Conley led all scorers with 25 points
and added three steals and was the Wildcats' America East Player of
the Game. Senior post Dane DiLiegro posted a double-double with 21
points and 12 rebounds.
UMBC freshman forward Chase
Plummer (Elizabeth, N.J.) scored all 13 of his team-high
points in the final 20 minutes and earned Player of the Game honors
for the Retrievers.
New Hampshire scored the game's first seven points , but UMBC
was still hanging around after two Adrian
Satchell free throws cut the deficit to 18-10 with 9:35 to
play in the first half. But those were the last points UMBC would
score in the half as UNH would pile on 21 to take an insurmountable
39-10 halftime advantage.
UMBC entered the game leading the conference with only 11
turnovers per game in league action, but committed 15 first-half
miscues, resulting in 20 UNH points.
The Retrievers outscored UNH, 36-24, in the final 20 minutes,
hitting 15 of 29 shots from the floor and outrebounding the
visitors, 20-7. The closest UMBC would come was the final margin of
17 points behind.
Plummer picked up two quick fouls in eight seconds in the first
half and exited the game. He hit 6-of-8 second half shots, snared a
team-high seven rebounds and recorded two steals in a total of 13
minutes.
UMBC's previous low for scoring in a half in a Division I game
was 13 points on two occasions, the most recent at Virginia Tech on
Dec. 22, 2009. The all-time record is nine points scored vs.
Indiana (Pa.) at the NCAA Division II level on Dec. 28, 1982.
Conley hit 9-of-18 shots from the floor and scored 18 of his
points in the first 20 minutes.
UMBC travels to Boston U. for a Tuesday night encounter at
Agganis Arena.
