BALTIMORE- Freshman guard Joey
Getz (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 15 points and added six
assists to lead UMBC to a 73-51 victory over The College of New
Jersey in an exhibition game played at the RAC Arena.
Getz hit all five of his shots from the floor , including one
from behind the arc, and all four at the charity stripe.
Classmate center Nate
Basalyga (Scranton, Pa.) hit six-of-eight shots from the
field and added 12 points for the Retrievers . Sophomore
forward Chase
Plummer (Elizabeth, N.J.) added 10 points and seven
rebounds, while junior forward Adrian
Satchell (Windsor, Conn.) led all players with eight
rebounds.
CNJ sophomore guard Matthew Rista led all scorers with 20
points.
UMBC jumped out to a 15-3 lead eight minutes into the game,
holding the Lions without a field goal until the 11:52 mark of the
first half. Rista's three-point field goal slice the lead to 18-12
with 6:40 left in the half, but the Retrievers extended the margin
to 31-19 at the break.
The Retrievers led by double figures throughout the final 20
minutes.
UMBC outrebounded the NCAA Division III squad, 51-27, and
rejected 10 Lion shots. The Retrievers hit 18 of 29 field goal
attempts in the second half and were at 46.7 percent (28 of 60) for
the game. The Lions converted only 12 of 45 attempts (26.7 percent)
for the contest.
UMBC opens the season on Friday, Nov. 11 when they entertain
Penn at 7:30 p.m.
