Piscataway, N.J.- The host Rutgers Scarlet Knights blistered the
nets from everywhere on the court and cruised to a 94-56 over UMBC
at the Rutgers Athletic Center.
Sophomore forward Chase Plummer
(Elizabeth, N.J.) and junior guard Ryan Cook (Laurel,
Md.) led UMBC with 11 points apiece. Junior wing Brian Neller (Red
Bank, N.J.) added nine points on 3-of-8 shooting from behind the
arc.
Cook was making his debut for the Retrievers.
Rutgers hit 34 of 61 shots (55.7%) from the floor, 10-of-17 from
behind the arc (58.8%) and 16-of-20 (80.0%) from the charity stripe
against both UMBC zone and man-to-man defenses.
Myles Mack led a balanced Knight attack with 21 points.
Rutgers opened the game up with 9-0 and 8-0 scoring runs in the
first half. After Neller buried his second trey of the half to trim
the deficit to 19-14 with 10:41 to play, the Scarlet Knights went
on a 9-0 surge to lead, 28-14, just over two minutes later. The
hosts closed the half on an 8-0 surge, hitting 17 of 30 shots from
the floor in the first stanza and led, 46-24, at the break.
The Retrievers (0-6) did hit five treys in the second half, but
the Scarlet Knights scored 48 second half markers to improve to 4-3
on the season.
UMBC opens the month of December with a Thursday, Dec. 1 contest
at American.
