College Park, Md. – Junior Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks
Sport/Cleveland State) picked up three individual wins, but the
UMBC swimming and diving teams were swept by in-state rival
Maryland Saturday afternoon at the Eppley Recreation
Center. The UMBC men fell 202-98 while the UMBC women
lost to the No. 13 ranked Terps 233-67.
After dropping both the men's and women's relays for the first
time this season, De Waal got the Retrievers in the win column
claiming victory in the 1000-yard freestyle
(9:30.56). Later on the junior picked up victories in
the 200 fly (1:50.14) and the 500 free (4:37.30), with all three
times setting new season-lows.
Sophomore Johan Rohtla (Tallin, Estonia/Tallinn Secondary
Science) also picked up a win for the Retrievers, claiming first in
the 200 back (1:50.12) for the third time in just four meets this
season.
On the women's side, UMBC had a tough task at hand going against
the nationally ranked Terps. Jennifer
Kotonias (Burtonsville, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) picked
up the only win for the Retrievers taking top honors in the 200 fly
(2:03.60). Kotonias has now won six individual events
this year, including going three for three when swimming the 200
fly.
The Retrievers continue their schedule on Thursday when both the
men and women head to Fairfax, Va. to compete in the three day
Patriot Invitational. Last year both UMBC squads picked
up team wins at the event.
